Protesters gathered on the steps of the UMass student union to speak out against Karl Rove on Tuesday, April 9, 2013.
Rove was scheduled to speak as part of an event hosted by the UMass and Smith College Republican Clubs. Some protesters attended the speech itself, while others remained on the steps or in the Student Union lobby. When protesters began chanting during Rove’s speech, they were escorted out of the lobby, and a police officer was stationed at the doors to the building.
Speakers at the anti-Rove rally included Rosa Clemente, former Green Party Vice-Presidential Candidate, Jeff Napolitano, of the American Friends Service Committee, and Emahunn Campbell, of Students Against Mass Incarceration. Campbell and Clemente are currently doctoral students at UMass.
