Up Jumped Spring: Fumi Tomita Trio

Featuring Fumi Tomita on bass, Austin McMahon on drums and Carl Clements on Saxophone and flute. Bassist, composer, and educator Fumi Tomita was active in the New York jazz scene for over fifteen years.

Jazziz nominated his album The Elephant Vanishes: Jazz Interpretations of the Short Stories of Haruki Murakami as one of the top jazz records of 2019. His newest recording Celebrating Bird: A Tribute to Charlie Parker was released in September 2020 by Next Level Music. He is currently the Assistant Professor of Jazz at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Austin McMahon is “…the most in demand drummer in Boston.” He recently recorded with the Ayn Inserto Jazz Orchestra, featuring: Sean Jones, and has performed with Kate McGarry, Jerry Bergonzi, David Liebman, George Garzone & Noah Preminger. McMahon has appeared at Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center and toured Italy, China & India.

Saxophonist/flutist/composer Carl Clements performs and records internationally in a variety of styles, with a particular focus on jazz, Hindustani classical music, and various forms of improvised and pre-composed music. He received a Ph.D. from the CUNY Graduate Center, an MFA from CalArts, a BM from Berklee College of Music, and has studied Hindustani classical flute (bansuri) since 1989. He is currently Saxophone/Improvisation Instructor and Jazz Combo Coach at Amherst College and is available for online and in-person lessons.

In honor of April Jazz Appreciation Month and the Northampton Jazz Workshop, the Northampton Jazz Festival is presenting a virtual jazz series entitled “Up Jumped Spring” each Tuesday in April at 7:30 P.M.
