Nature of NOM Production Grants

Northampton Open Media Production Grants support multimedia arts creators in the greater community of Northampton, MA. By easing the financial burden of production we aim to empower people in our region to tell stories and craft experiences that may not otherwise be possible. This grant’s purpose is to achieve a specific objective and enhance an artistic skill and talent of the grantee. 2022 will mark the 9th round of production grants distributed by Northampton Open Media.

NOM will endeavor to fund at least one grant for a youth project, meaning an applicant who is 18 years of age or younger, and at least one grant to a self-described BIPOC candidate.

NOM Multimedia Arts Grant

In 2024 we are retaining the approach we had to grantmaking in recent years. This means we are not providing any specific categories under which applicants should craft their grants. The following is a list of examples of grants that we know fall within the scope of our funding considerations. It is important to note that these examples are not comprehensive. We’re excited to see applicants outside of the boundaries of our own expectations.

Grant projects examples could be…

Short films, narrative, experimental, documentary, other

Public art projects with multimedia components

Workshops and classes

XR projects – virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality

Games that incorporate a multimedia aspect

Apps

Theater with multimedia components

Audio projects like podcasts, audio art, or experimental audio

APPLICATION DETAILS

Up to $2000 per project

NOM will endeavor to fund at least one grant for a youth project, meaning an applicant who is 18 years of age or younger.

NOM will endeavor to fund at least one grant to a self-described BIPOC candidate.

Applicants can submit their application in any combination of written, video, and/or audio formats

The elements applicants are strongly encouraged to include are a detailed pitch of the project, its process, a budget, and a timeline.

Supplementary materials are encouraged such as examples of past work, scripts for short films, commitment letters for documentaries, statements of partnerships, look books etc.

NOM will also be hosting live pitch sessions for prospective grant applicants

TIMELINE

Applications are EXTENDED TO DUE BY due by 11:59pm on Sunday, OCTOBER 27, 2024

Selections will be announced in November, 2024

Projects should be completed by December 31, 2025.

COMMUNITY CONNECTION

NOM supports the broad community in an effort to enable expression and fluency in moving image, multimedia, and immersive experience. We are also connected to Northampton, MA. To that end we ask that you demonstrate a connection to Northampton in some fashion. Examples might include:

The applicant lives or works or goes to school in Northampton

The project will be shot or produced in Northampton

The project will take place or be performed in Northampton

CLEAR PATH TO COMPLETION

Your application should demonstrate your ability to complete the proposed production. It is  important that you provide materials that can convincingly persuade the selection committee that you are proposing a viable project. This includes your budget, schedule, script and any other pertinent information you can give us.  NOM may ask some applicants for additional materials after their initial submission and reserves the right to interview grant applicants as part of its decision-making process.

WHAT WON’T BE FUNDED?

Grant recipients in consecutive rounds

Projects or events completed prior to applying

Finishing grants, such as post-production for otherwise completed work

More than one application by the same applicant

Grant money may not be used to purchase equipment already available through NOM. For equipment NOM does not have, NOM may consider purchasing that equipment and owning it, and loaning it to the applicant for the grant.

Grants with a conflict of interest (see below)

CONFLICT OF INTEREST

Grant recipients cannot be NOM employees, board members or relatives thereof, meaning spouse, domestic partner, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, in-laws, and step parent, step child, guardian and ward, or member of one’s household. Staff and board members of NOM may not receive payment for any involvement in the production of these grants.

CREDIT

All successful applicants must properly credit Northampton Open Media for providing funds to the project in all press materials including posters, programs, announcements, paid advertising, press  and social media by putting the NOM logo on materials. Any videos produced must feature the NOM production grant stinger at the beginning and the language “Funded in part by Northampton Open Media” at the end.

CONTENT AND RELEASES

All productions must adhere to FCC rules regarding content. (https://www.fcc.gov/general/broadcast-cable-and-satellite-guides)

Please note that all rights, clearances, and releases must be secured and retained by the grantee for all material in the production. This includes but is not limited to the use of music, images and individual talent releases.

DISTRIBUTION RIGHTS

NOM will maintain nonexclusive distribution rights for all projects including on television, social media, public screenings, and through mediums not yet invented, in whole and part. Note these works will fall under the Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND International 4.0 license found here.
